Liposuction Procedure

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction or lipoplasty is a body procedure to remove fat deposits from different areas of the body.  Did you know that liposuction is the second most common plastic surgery procedure in the USA? In 2012, over 313,000 people received liposuction. Along with breast augmentation, liposuction in Los Angeles rank as the #1 and #2 most popular cosmetic surgeries. These statistics come from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Dr. Kapoor is well known for providing patients with the very best plastic surgery has to offer.

Why should I get Liposculpture?

If you want to get rid of small pockets of stubborn fat then liposuction is an excellent option. Diet and exercise don’t always get rid of resistant fat on your body. Liposculpture slims and reshapes these specific areas on your body. Dr. Kapoor removes excess fat deposits and this improves your bodies proportion. It also enhances your self-image. Many people refer to this surgery as “liposculpture". Do you want to learn more about getting a slimmer and firmer body shape?

Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?

If you are a healthy man or woman of normal weight with firm, elastic skin then you may be a liposuction candidate. Another component is whether you have stubborn pockets of excess fat. This excess fat is in very specific areas of your body. Healthy patients with a non-life threatening illness or medical condition are ideal. The most important component to aid healing is that you don’t smoke.

The most common areas for liposuction or lipo are:
Abdomen (stomach) and waist;
Flanks (love handles);
Thighs;
Hips (saddlebags) and buttocks;
Upper Arms;
Knees;
Breasts;
Cheeks, chin (double chin), and neck;
Calves and ankles.

Lipo is often done alone or with other plastic surgery procedures. Patients often get liposuction with a tummy tuck, face-lift, or Brazilian butt lift.

Do men get liposuction, too?

Liposuction is not only for women! Women represent the majority of cosmetic surgery patients. But the number of men getting cosmetic surgery has increased a lot in the past few years. ASAPS reports that in 2012, men had close to 1 million plastic surgery procedures. Male Liposuction was the number one choice by men that wanted to improve their appearance. Cosmetic or plastic surgery enhances not only physical appearance. There are psychological benefits to looking better, too.

Liposuction Techniques

Dr. Kapoor continues to refine liposuction techniques on his patients. This improves your safety and the effectiveness of your surgery. There have been almost 30 years of improvements in liposuction surgery. While more fat cells are being removed, blood loss and discomfort are being minimized. Risk of complication is another significant improvement in the liposuction field of improvement.

There are a few different liposuction techniques used by plastic surgeons. The procedure involves the use of a cannula (a hollow tube) placed through small incisions. The surgeon then sucks out the fat with the help of suction or vacuum-like device. There are two main factors with liposuction technique. The first is the amount of fluid injection in your body. The second is the mechanism by which the cannula works to remove the fat.

Tumescent Liposuction

The tumescent liposuction technique is the most popular in Los Angeles. This procedure involves the use of local anesthesia. It shows a significant reduction in blood loss. Tumescent liposuction also eliminates the risk of general anesthesia. There are many advantages of the tumescent technique.

  • Less pain, more gain: Because tumescent uses local anesthesia, the approach is less painful. It is more a more pleasant option than putting a patient under general anesthesia or through an IV. This also allows patients to avoid post-surgery nausea. Vomiting and nausea are the common side effects of general anesthesia.
  • Less danger and safer: Tumescent liposuction proves to be very safe. Dr. Kapoor uses a diluted local anesthetic solution. The use of this solution lowers the risk of lidocaine toxicity. It also reduces increased heart rate from epinephrine.
  • Less blood loss: Many argue this is the best reason to get tumescent liposuction. This technique has very little blood loss involved. Even more so when compared to the traditional lipo approach.

What is Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction?

With this procedure, the cannula sucks out the fat and transmits ultrasound vibrations. What does this mean for getting rid of fat? The ultrasound vibrations go within your body and it breaks up the stubborn fat cells. By the breakdown of this fat, it becomes easier for Dr. Kapoor to suction it out from the target area. Let’s take a look at the advantages of Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction:

  • More fat removal: High-intensity, high-frequency, external ultrasound, make the fat cells easier to suction out. This means Dr. Kapoor can target even more fat cells during your surgery.
  • Easier on both patient and surgeon: The use of pulsed energy waves along with the special cannula, allow for a decrease in discomfort. While Dr. Kapoor removes the excess fat, the trauma to your body is less.
  • Targets difficult areas: Some patients have more fibrous areas that make it difficult to target with lipo. Examples are the back or male breast tissue. It is a great option because it exerts its effect on fat cells and fibrous connective tissue.

Laser Assisted Liposuction

This is not too different from ultrasound assisted liposuction. Laser-assisted lipo or laser lipo also remove larger volumes of fat. The laser zaps the fat. This makes the fat cells more fluid-like and easier to suction out of the target area. The advantages of laser lipo include:

  • Newer collagen, tighter skin: Laser liposuction also has the added benefits of producing new collagen. It tightens the skin after the fat gets suctioned out.
  • Removes more fat: More fat gets removed because a laser zaps the fat. The fat cell becomes liquid-like. Bleeding is also reduced as the laser cauterizes the surrounding blood cells.
  • Easier on the patient: The laser cauterizes the surrounding blood vessels and causes less bruising.

Is recovery from lipo painful?

With any surgery, bruising and swelling are most common in the first two weeks. This starts to subside as you heal in the weeks after your surgery. Some minor swelling persists up to six months. You will wear an elastic compression garment during the first week. This controls swelling and supports the new contours of your body. Many patients say they have some discomfort. Others describe it as burning, itching, or temporary numbness. Dr. Kapoor will give you medication to help manage these symptoms. The best part is yet to come. As the swelling and bruising begin to fade, the results appear. You will start to see your new, slimmer, and thinner body shape.

How much time should I take off from work?

Most people in Los Angeles take five to seven days off from work. There should be no strenuous activity after liposuction surgery. One month’s time is optimal for proper healing. Your results will last a long time if you follow your diet and exercise regimen. Liposuction is a great surgery to help maintain an already healthy lifestyle.

I’ve always wanted to get rid of my belly fat, but I was too scared to get a tummy tuck. After I met with Dr. Kapoor, he showed me how his liposuction technique can get me the kind of results that I was after.  I was thoroughly satisfied with my results and procedure. The recovery was much easier than I had anticipated and I was back to work before I knew it. For the first time in years I can wear a sexy bikini at the beach and that feels so good.

Lipo Questions

Is lipo an option to treat obesity or diabetes?
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. Nor is it a substitute for proper diet and exercise. There are some studies that find liposuction may provide some health benefits. Treating obesity and diabetes is not one of them.

Does lipo get rid of cellulite?
Liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite either. Cellulite is the dimpled skin that appears on the things, hips, butt, or loose saggy skin. Liposuction aims to remove stubborn fat pockets that are diet and exercise resistant. This allows for improved body shape and contour.
