If your body is plagued by a large amount of excess skin around the abdomen, lower abdominal skin laxity, stretch marks or severely stretched stomach muscles, then a tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty) is the best option available to help you achieve a flat, firm abdomen. It produces a flatter stomach by creating firm abdominal muscles and tightening the abdominal skin. The procedure can smooth out skin, reducing stretch marks and creating the tight, toned abs that almost everyone desires.
Dr. Kapoor is a well-trained, highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills who uses a refined, mastered technique to improve his patient abdominal shape and size to achieve the desired results. His detail-oriented, results driven tummy tuck technique achieves the best possible results with the least amount of trauma and scarring, minimizes potential complications and leads to an optimal recovery process for the patient.
Although these two procedures are the most common surgeries used to get rid of belly fat, they are very different. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, procedure is more extensive than liposuction as it involves the removal of a large amount of skin from the lower abdomen while also tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. This procedure also tightens the inner girdle, resulting in a flatter, more attractive midsection. Liposuction removes fat deposits through a series of small incisions and using a hollow tube and vacuum to suck out fat cells. Liposuction can help reduce specific areas with excess fat cells that are resistant to even the most intensive efforts to diets and exercise, such as hips, outer thighs and the lower abdomen.
Not all abdominoplasty surgeries are the same. The extent of loose skin and excess fat, as well as your abdominal strength and other factors will help Dr. Kapoor decide which procedure can help you achieve your desired results.
Ideal procedure for individuals with only a small amount of excess fat and skin.
Better for patients with a moderate amount of excess fat and skin with/without weak abdominal muscles.
For patients with a large amount of loose belly, hip, and flank (love handles) skin, excess fat, and weak abdominal muscles.
In a full tummy tuck, the scar will extend across the lower abdomen, typically extending from one hip to the other. There is also a scar around the belly button. A standard tummy tuck involves repair of the rectus muscles, which have been stretched from pregnancy, and removal of excess loose skin and tissue. With the mini abdominoplasty, the lower abdominal scar is shorter, and there is no scar at the belly button. Mini tummy tuck is not as extensive of a procedure as the standard.
Dr. Kapoor will perform the abdominoplasty onsite at the Beverly Hills Wellness Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art AAAHC-certified facility. Surgical time will be discussed with you, but the average tummy tuck abdominoplasty surgery takes about two to three hours to complete. General anesthesia is often used.
Before surgery you and Dr. Kapoor will have:
Q- What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
A- Although there are similarities between the two procedures, liposuction only targets specific pockets of fat, while a tummy tuck targets excess fat, skin, and weakened muscles. Since liposuction does not address the musculature of the abdomen, it is recommended for patients who have good skin tone and no looseness of the muscle of their abdominal wall. Tummy tucks are most commonly recommended to patients who have had massive weight loss or multiple pregnancies which have left excess flabby abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles. Liposuction is most commonly recommended to patients who have stubborn pockets of fat that persist despite a strict diet and exercise regimen.
Q- What causes excess fat or skin to accumulate?
A- Over-eating in general, eating too many fat-producing foods, excessive liquor consumption, and lack of exercise are the obvious causes of weight (fat) gain, but are not the only ones. Many women who gain excess weight during pregnancy are unable to get rid of unsightly bulges afterwards; if they don't plan to have more children, they may look for this type of surgical correction. Also, persons who have successfully lost a lot of weight via exercise and/or diet, or by gastric-bypass surgery, may end up with excess skin, and the only way to remove it is with an abdominoplasty.
Q- Am I a good candidate?
A- The ideal candidate is an adult who is at a stable weight, is in good health and has realistic expectations of the outcome. You should have a degree of excess skin and fatty tissue in the abdominal region. Most commonly tummy tucks are performed on those who have undergone massive weight loss and post-partum women or women who have had multiple pregnancies. Women with plans to become pregnant should postpone a tummy tuck until after their pregnancy, and should not consider tummy tuck surgery until at least six months after delivering their last child.
This 28-year-old woman came into our Beverly Hills office wanting to eliminate the loose, slightly hanging skin on her abdominal region. During the abdominoplasty, excess abdominal skin is excised and the underlying abdominal muscles are tightened. Excess fat around the region is removed using liposuction when deemed necessary. In order to remove the excess skin and to access the abdominal muscles, a horizontal incision will be created, right underneath the region underwear rests. As see above, the tummy tuck incision will be placed low enough that any resulting scar will not be visible.
This particular patient had liposuction of the flank/hip area in addition to her tummy tuck so that her figure could be further enhanced. As you can see, she also chose to undergo the breast augmentation procedure to bring about a more comprehensive body makeover.
This 34-year-old woman came into our offices desiring procedures that would lift and enhance the shape of her breast and get rid of the excess fat and skin that had developed around her abdominal region. She also had an excess amount of stretch marks on both her upper and lower abdominals that she wanted to remove.
The tummy tuck procedure was able to reduce the amount of stretch marks that appeared on the upper and lower torso through the surgical excision of loose, excess skin and the stretching of the remaining skin to bring about a tight, contoured tummy. Liposuction was also performed on her abdominals, waist, flanks, and thighs so that her abdominal region could be further sculpted. The incision used during the tummy tuck was placed low enough that she will be able to hide any potential scarring from view, as can be seen above.
A breast lift was performed in conjunction with the tummy tuck was able to not only bring about a more pleasing breast shape and placement of the nipples, but also was able to provide relief for her back pain.
As you can see, this 29-year-old patient had visibly evident excess abdominal skin, with some excess abdominal fat present. By using abdominoplasty with some liposuction on certain targeted regions, a more contoured and flat tummy was able to be sculpted.
During this patient's abdominoplasty, we made sure to place the incision low enough on the abdomen that any resulting scar would be left covered by underwear and swimsuits. The underlying abdominal muscles were tightened with sutures and the excess abdominal skin was pulled down and trimmed so that a smooth, even abdominal region was left behind.
Liposuction was performed on her flanks, waist, and hip regions so that we could give her an abdominal region that was optimally sculpted. She also chose to undergo a breast augmentation so that she could achieve rounder breasts and a bigger cup size.
During this season of thankfulness I wanted to take the time to tell you once again how grateful I am to have you as my surgeon. Every day I am reminded in countless ways how much my life has changed for the better. All I have to do is look in the mirror or slip on my size 4 jeans. Not a day goes by that I don't think you with appreciation for all you have done for me. I hope you enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving surrounded by those you love. I'm looking forward to seeing you again at the end of the month. With heartfelt appreciation-

Rachel / Beverly Hills – Tummy Tuck with Liposuction
After considering plastic surgery for years, I finally got the courage to visit a few plastic surgeons in Southern California. Dr. Kapoor was by far the most impressive of all the surgeons I met with. Not only does he possess amazing credentials, but his ability to relate with you as a person in a genuine way is what is most impressive. He listened to what I wanted, rather than pushing a bunch of different procedures on me. I didn't want to change me, I wanted to improve me! He really understood that and helped make my dreams come true. Thank you so much Dr. Kapoor!
