Dr. Kapoor performs most lip augmentation procedures at his Beverly Hills office. Surgical procedures, such as those involving implants, may also be performed on site in their state-of-the-art AAAHC-certified facility. Procedural times will vary depending on the particular material used. Injectable fillers may take as little as fifteen minutes to complete while fat injection and implants will take longer. Injectables like collagen often do not require anesthesia, though a numbing spray may be used upon request. Local anesthesia is often used for fat injection and implant procedures.
Fat injection is performed by extracting fat from another area of the body, such as the abdomen, buttocks or thighs, and then injecting the fat into the lips. Implants may be inserted through tiny incisions made on the inside of the corners of the mouth. Injectable fillers are injected into the lips with a fine needle.
Swelling and bruising may result after lip augmentation regardless of the technique used. These side effects typically fade within several days to a week. Patients can immediately return to their normal activities following lip augmentation with injectable materials, while the recovery period is often within one week for surgical procedures and fat injection. Injectables often involve little discomfort. Some pain may result from surgical procedures and fat injection and this can be controlled with prescribed medication. The results of collagen injections may last up to four months, while fat injections and other temporary injectable fillers tend to last longer.
Lip Augmentation Questions
Q. What options are offered?
If you'd like fuller, plumper lips, lip augmentation may be right for you. Liquid collagen, fat and other injectable fillers, as well as implantable materials, can add more fullness to the lips, providing either temporary or permanent results.
Q. What are the risks?
Complications are infrequent and usually minor when lip augmentation is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. An allergic reaction is possible with bovine-derived collagen and requires an allergy skin test at least one month prior to treatment. Human-derived collagen materials and fat injection involve little to no risk of allergic reaction. Other potential risks may include infection, lip asymmetry and implant shifting.
Q. Where is the procedure performed?
Lip augmentation procedures involving injectables may be performed in the office setting. If you are undergoing fat transfer or an implant procedure, Dr. Kapoor may perform your procedure onsite at the Beverly Hills Wellness Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art AAAHC-certified facility. Your injectable procedure may take as little as fifteen minutes to complete. Anesthesia is not required, though a numbing spray can be used if you prefer. Fat injection and implant procedures will take longer to perform and local anesthesia is often used. The incisions for implant procedures are very small and are usually located on the inside of the corners of the mouth.
