Lip Augmentation
Q. What options are offered?
If you'd like fuller, plumper lips, lip augmentation may be right for you. Liquid collagen, fat and other injectable fillers, as well as implantable materials, can add more fullness to the lips, providing either temporary or permanent results.
Zyderm and Zyplast are collagen fillers made of protein derived from purified cow skin. These injectables may be used to plump thin lips, providing results that can last up to four months. Fat injection, which is also referred to as autologous fat transplantation or microlipoinjection, involves the extraction of fat cells from another area of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs or buttocks, with traditional liposuction techniques. These fat cells are then injected into the lips, providing temporary fullness lasting several months or longer.
Besides collagen and fat, other commonly used materials include:
- Restylane - This filler, comprised of hyaluronic acid, is similar to a collagen but results are often longer lasting (up to nine months).
- Radiesse - Comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite, the same calcium compound found in bone, this filler can provide results lasting up to two years.
- HylaForm - Another filler comprised of hyaluronic acid, HylaForm can provide results lasting six months or longer.
- Autologen - This injectable dermal implant is prepared from collagen derived from the patient’s own skin. Results last longer than bovine-derived collagen.
- Dermalogen - Dermalogen is an injectable made from collagen derived from donor tissue. As with Autologen, results last longer than bovine-derived collagen.
- Fascia - An injectable donor tissue derived from the white connective tissue that supports body structure. Results last up to six months.
- AlloDerm - An implantable natural collagen sheet made from donated skin.
- SoftForm - An implantable material made from ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) which produces permanent results.
- Gore-Tex - Another implantable material made from ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) producing permanent results.
Q. What are the risks?
Complications are infrequent and usually minor when lip augmentation is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. An allergic reaction is possible with bovine-derived collagen and requires an allergy skin test at least one month prior to treatment. Human-derived collagen materials and fat injection involve little to no risk of allergic reaction. Other potential risks may include infection, lip asymmetry and implant shifting.
Q. Where is the procedure performed?
Lip augmentation procedures involving injectables may be performed in the office setting. If you are undergoing fat transfer or an implant procedure, Dr. Kapoor may perform your procedure onsite at the Beverly Hills Wellness Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art AAAHC-certified facility. Your injectable procedure may take as little as fifteen minutes to complete. Anesthesia is not required, though a numbing spray can be used if you prefer. Fat injection and implant procedures will take longer to perform and local anesthesia is often used. The incisions for implant procedures are very small and are usually located on the inside of the corners of the mouth.
Swelling and bruising may occur after your procedure, and these side effects should subside within several days to a week. Injectable procedures typically involve little to no discomfort and an immediate return to normal activities. Recovery after fat injection and implant procedures will be longer, typically within a week, and some pain or discomfort may result which can be controlled with prescribed medication. |
