Chemical Peel Questions

Q. What is a chemical peel?/
A chemical peel is a chemical solution which can be applied to the facial skin to improve the texture and overall appearance. The chemical peel removes the damaged outer layers of skin, improving the appearance of wrinkles, facial blemishes, uneven skin pigmentation and facial scars. Chemical peels may also be used to remove pre-cancerous skin growths and control acne.

There are three different types of chemical peels which vary in strength. Phenol peels are the strongest, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) provides a medium-depth peel, and alphahydroxy acids (AHA) are the mildest. At our practice, we use a variety of alphahydroxy acids (AHA) such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acids. These peels can diminish fine wrinkling, improve uneven pigmentation such as sun damage, help to control acne, and smooth dry, rough skin.  AHA peels provide a smoother, brighter appearance to the facial skin.

Q. Who can benefit from a chemical peel?
Men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of wrinkles, facial blemishes, uneven skin pigmentation, facial scars, acne, or pre-cancerous skin growths may be candidates for chemical peel treatment. For individuals with fine wrinkling, uneven pigmentation, acne, or dry skin, the AHA peel may provide an ideal solution. This peel can be applied in varying concentrations on a weekly basis and may even be mixed with a facial wash or cream as part of a daily skincare regimen. During the initial consultation, Dr. Kapoor will examine your skin and discuss your goals in order to determine the best treatment plan to meet your needs.

Q. What are the risks?
Complications are generally rare when the chemical peel is performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon. Nevertheless, there are potential risks which may include infection and scarring. As the mildest of the chemical peels, there are few risks or complications associated with the AHA peel.

Q. What’s the first step?
The first step in the chemical peel process is an initial consultation with Dr. Kapoor in his Beverly Hills office. During this meeting, you will discuss your expectations and any questions or concerns that you may have. Dr. Kapoor will examine your facial skin and go over you medical history. He will explain the benefits, recovery, costs and risks associated with treatment.

Q. What happens during treatment?
Dr. Kapoor performs the chemical peel in his office. No anesthesia is used for the AHA peel as it is produces just a slight stinging sensation when applied. Your skin will first be cleansed and then the AHA solution will be applied. It will remain on the skin for no more than ten minutes before being removed. Periodic treatment in the form of a series of peels may be necessary in order to achieve your desired result.

Q. What happens after treatment?
Recovery after an AHA peel is relatively mild. Some minor stinging, redness, irritation and crusting may occur but these side effects will subside as the skin adjusts to the treatment regimen. Your normal activities may be resumed right after your AHA treatment, but it is important that you protect the skin from the sun by wearing sunblock.

Q. When will I be able to start enjoying the benefits of treatment?
While the skin will have a healthier glow after your AHA treatment, you may find that the improvements are subtle at first. Further improvement will occur with continued treatments, providing an overall fresh appearance and improved skin texture.
